Conventions of a thriller film

The Shining

Conventions of a thriller of a film consists of everything that makes a thriller film exciting and scary; a antaginist chasing a protagonist, weapons, the main four are building suspense, shock, surprise and tension. I am going to show the conventions in the film the shining. I have chosen the film 'The Shining' because in the scene i have chosen it has loads of conventions to set the scene and create a relationship with the protagonist.

When Johnny is walking towards the bathroom the door, the soundtrack used is high pitch which suggests the danger is high. This puts the audience into suspense because they are wondering if he will be able to get to the protagonist. The antagonist is walking towards the door with a limp, this connotes that he is injured therefor the protagonist stands a chance of getting away. This implies that the victim may survive this scenario makes the audience hope that she can survive.

The tension builds when the protagonist can not get fit out of the window.  The audience do not know how long she has got to keep trying to get out the window, because Johnny still outside the bathroom door, therefor the tension builds the longer she tries. There is tension because the audience are almost certain that if she does not make it out of the window, Johnny will murder her.

The protagonist actions show that she is scared, also the long shot of the building shows that it is an isolated location. Both of these are typical thriller conventions: an isolated location, and a scared female victim. To be isolated is to be on your own, to make the audience think that it is just the protagonist and antagonist in the area adds to the fear factor, because there is no one around to help. Also the victim being scared and screaming, makes the audience on edge, as it puts the antagonist in a position that we think he is going to get her. Therefor builds the tension.

In conclusion the conventions in the shinning are used very well to build suspense and tension. There was not any shock in my scene, but the location was perfect for the antagonist chasing the protagonist, because it looked like a huge abandoned hotel. The conventions of a thriller are elements that are common, patterns that can be used in different films from the same category. The shinning had the classic example of the antagonist chasing the protagonist.

  1. This is a minimal analysis of some of the conventions used within this sequence. You have described what happens within the sequence, rather than analyse conventions.

    You need to:
    1) Explain what conventions are in your introduction
    2) Use PEER to provide a detailed analysis
    3) Don't describe what happens in the sequence throughout, simply give your evidence for your point made
    4) You need to explain HOW and WHAT each convention creates within the sequence
    5) Explain HOW AND WHY the convention is conventional to the thriller genre and how it enables the audience to build a relationship with characters involved
    6) Include a conclusion explaining how this research has helped you understand conventions of the genre and what inspirations you will take on board and use within your sequence
    7) Be specific with terminology - sountrackk is what type of sound?
    8) Check spelling and grammar etc.
