Research into sound-Miss Miller

Sound

Sound is very important in a thriller film. The sound can set the scene, it can build tension, the increase in volume or pitch, can change the mood of the character, for example loud volume could mean that the character is getting angry. If you watched the scariest film there is without sound, you will more than likely not be scared at all. This shows sound has a huge impact on thriller films, sound creates the fear factor in thrillers.

Non-diegetic is being able to hear the sound, but cannot see where it is coming from. In this clip from scream, when the she's is on the phone to the killer. It is non diegetic because you can not see the person on the other end of the phone but you can hear them. This creates a suspense because the audience know that killer is more than lucky near by, and are wondering when he will jump out. The audience can relate to this because they want to be able to let her know that scream is probably outside, it also makes you feel scared for the victim. Overall non-diegetic sound in this case makes the man on the phone unidentified, which leads to the audience being able to relate to the female character, by both the audience and her not knowing who the man is.

Diegetic sound is
part of the film. In this case, the sound of the women pulling the knife out of the case and back in. This connotes that we may hear the same sound when she gets stabbed, this also shows the audience that there are weapons in the house which could be used by the killer. This puts the audience in suspense as they are waiting for the killer to jump out. If the audience have seen scream before they will know the killer, nines times out of ten uses a knife, so when they see her pulling it out, the audience knows it relates to the killer. Another diegetic sound in the film is the sound of the locks clicking when she looks the doors,

On screen sound is sound that you can see where it is coming from. In scream the on screen sound is the character speaking to the killer on the phone, it is on screeen so the audience can see her facial expression. the part where the killer said "I want to know who i am looking at," and she replies "what did you say?" this is on screen sound to show her emotions, at this point she is showing the audience that she is scared and worried he may be outside. This makes the audience feel worried for her and it also builds the suspence as the audience are wondering where the killer is.

Off screen sound you can hear it but can not see where  it is coming from. In scream the phone call, the killers part is off screen which leaves him unidentifed, this makes it more scary as the audience dont know what the killer looks like, so when the killer does jump out it will make it more scary. Also when the female character looks out the back door you can hear dogs barking but can not hear it, this creates a eery feeling about the garden and suggests that the man could be out there.
